Finished Guillermo del Toro’s/Chuck Hogan’s The Strain

The StrainI was sitting at the airport when I started this book. It was raining and dreary outside, we had a good 45 minute wait before boarding. The first chapter began - passengers on a plane and the “dead” plane on the the tarmac.

“Uh oh, should I really be reading this when I’m about to board a plane?” I thought to myself.

I couldn’t help myself. Between dozing and horrible plane food (think pig in a blanket nuked), the book sucked me in. By the time we landed at our final destination of Honolulu 10 hours later, I was already halfway through the hardback edition and just a bit creeped out. I sighed in relief when we landed in full glorious daylight with the breeze from the Pacific welcoming us to our second home.

I finished the first of the trilogy last night, a full day later than when I’d started it. It left me wanting more. I’m impatient to start the second book and a bit grumpy that it’s not even published yet.

The del Toro/Hogan combination has definitely written a book that should translate well to the screen. And vampires as they define it, although powerful, are in no way sexy. Nor do they emote any form of compassion or sympathy from the reader. It’s a creepy, CSI-style story with a nice cast of characters from mostly male perspectives. *shudders*

I highly recommend it. Can’t wait for book #2 and would see the movie if it came out. :)
