I live in a glass house.
I’m lucky to live in a glass house. I also live on a lake. The views are fantastic. I am blessed to live in a glass house on a lake.
Living in a glass house on a small peninsula in the middle of a private lake is… pretty damn nice. It’s a National Geographic show on weekends; and every sunrise and sunset.
From this glass house on the lake, I am able...

This liberal supports health care reform
According to Pew Research, I’m a liberal. My leanings are typical of an American who has lived or grown up overseas. I’ve never pigeon-holed myself in the past as a liberal. I’m conservative in some areas and mostly middle-of-the-road. I took Pew’s survey and there you go. I’m a liberal.
As a military brat, I’m also intensely patriotic. I know what...

On vacations
Here I am on vacation in what most would consider paradise and I’m tired and missing home. All previous vacations to the same destination left me wanting to move here. All of a sudden, I’m ready to go home. WTF?
Mayhap it’s our new home or something to actually DO? I’ve read, umm….let me count…SEVEN books while here. I’ve gone walking, hiking, swimming,...

I was sitting at the airport when I started this book. It was raining and dreary outside, we had a good 45 minute wait before boarding. The first chapter began - passengers on a plane and the “dead” plane on the the tarmac.
“Uh oh, should I really be reading this when I’m about to board a plane?” I thought to myself.
I couldn’t help myself. Between dozing and...

Designs on Policy by Allison Arieff, New York Times http://arieff.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/19/designs-on-policy/ Apparently, our currency’s design is cluttered and needs a good revamp. A contest for submissions was sponsored here - http://richardsmith.posterous.com/.

Once upon a time, a long time ago, I used to like to write. I’m an avid reader and my literature tastes have always run to fiction - from one end of the spectrum to the other. I remember in my youth, I used to enjoy writing short stories and poetry. Yes, even poetry. Today, I find myself reluctant to write. Why is that? I started pondering that question after dropping off the kids in...

Study: Social Security Numbers May Be Hackable →
NPR.org, July 6, 2009 · Information experts say they can predict most of a person’s Social Security number if they know their name and place and date of birth.
The key here is SSNs assigned AFTER 1988. Crap, my kids were born after 1988.
They discovered that in one try, they could predict the first five digits of a person’s Social Security number 44 percent of the time if the...
Lesson of the Day: Word usage: Troika
Ran across the word “troika” in a tech article today. Within the context of the paragraph, I understood the meaning. But in all honestly, I’d never seen it applied in general consumer literature.
Excerpt:
“a widget platform for watching and sharing documentary films that’s being headed up by a troika of ex-AOL executives (Ted Leonsis, Steve Case, Miles Gilburne), did not...
